This past weekend was the last hare scramble race of the season in Bunnell, FL. Well, it wasn't really the last one, there is one more, but it's on Mother's Day -- who has a sporting event on Mother's Day? So, for any of us with a mother or a wife with kids, it was the last race of the season.
Unfortunately, I was not able to compete, as my wife was very sick and I had to take care of the kids. Dad duty comes before racing. One of my friends, Mark, did race, however and managed to break his foot during the race. You might be able to see in the image on the right that he broke three of his foot bones. This was all done while going over a whoop section (that's a section of very small (1'-3') hills, sometimes several hundred yards long) too fast. The impact caused the fractures, even through a motocross style boot with stiff soles. I always worry about coming down wrong from a jump or colliding with a tree at 40 mph, but hitting a whoop section too fast?
Fortunately, Mark was able to finish the race and came in 13th, after being in 8th before the fracture. Now, he's on a no weight bearing restriction for 4-6 weeks. Ouch! Well, at least it was the last race of the season. ![]()
