What do you put in your trail mix?
I'm just curious. I've been making quite a few different ones, recently. I've never really used the standard "GORP" (granola, oatmeal, raisins, and peanuts), but I have a "basic" version. This version calls for peanuts, almonds, cashews, raisins, and M&Ms. You can make your own, but I usually pick this one up at Costco.
Recently, in an effort to revise my diet for better performance in my hare scramble races (like a mountain bike race, only on a motorcycle), I have tried to reduce my sugar intake, so the M&M-inclusive trail mix had to go. Initially, I just cut out the M&Ms and substituted low sodium peanuts and cashews and raw almonds. Then, I visited a health food store that had myriad options for trail mix ingredients. Since then, I've added soy nuts and sesame sticks to my trail mix formula.
A lesson I have learned from having two kids under 4 is that raisins are STICKY! We have substituted dried cranberries for raisins in their snacking menu, so it gave me an idea. Why not try these little red morsels in my trail mix? Well, they are great! They add a nice little zing to the mix and don't stick to all the rest of the ingredients! Amazing what you can learn from a 3 year old.
This is the final formula, for now, but I'm curious what everyone else uses. So, let me know, write me a comment, send me an email, or send smoke signals.
