I had my Myakka City Hare Scramble this last weekend and it was the first opportunity I had to race test my diet plan. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in stopping my stomach aches. Fortunately, I think I have discovered the problem. My friend that originally helped me with this issue mentioned that I should eat a Gu packet before the race, as it has a lot of complex carbohydrates and is low in sugars. I took this to mean any generic energy gel, as Gu tends to be a term for any energy gel, as well as the name brand of a certain energy gel.
With that said, I took two PowerGels before the race and have since been informed by my friend that these are notorious for causing stomach problems for the racers that run triathlons with him. I am now just going to eat right, drink lots of water, and avoid any energy gels for the next race and see how that works. Then, I might add in the name brand Gu packets and see how that works. I'll keep you up to date in the blog with my results.
